VA to Confirm Death Before Stopping Benefits

The Department of Veterans Affairs recently enacted a new policy that will confirm a veteran has actually died before suspending benefits. This comes after the VA realized it wrongly stopped benefits for more than 115 veterans who were still very much alive.

Two veterans who had stopped receiving benefits went to the Veterans Advocacy Clinic at Stetson University’s College of Law for help. The clinic represents area veterans appealing such VA decisions. In one reported case, a veteran had neared bankruptcy while spending months trying to prove he was still alive.Under the new policy, the VA will mail the veteran a letter and give the veteran or their family 30 days to respond before suspending benefits.
